warum sollte Russland verlieren?

"The Reagan administration’s military buildup was not intended to force the collapse of the USSR. Rather, its objective was “peace through strength,” as officials repeatedly stated. This policy had three components. The short-term goal was to catch up with the Soviet Union. Reagan officials (erroneously) believed Moscow had been building up its military capabilities throughout the 1970s, while the United States had let its forces languish. The United States had fallen behind in the arms race, they concluded, resulting in dangerous vulnerability. The second objective was to deter Soviet expansionism. Officials assumed (mistakenly) that Moscow had invaded Afghanistan in 1979 because America appeared weak and the Kremlin believed it could invade with impunity. Renewed American strength would prevent future adventurism. The ultimate objective of the buildup, however, was to persuade the Soviet Union to agree to arms reductions. Reagan officials assumed that Moscow would not agree to draw down its forces until it was confronted by an adversary of equal strength. Their strategy was to build up military power so as to convince the Soviets to enter into arms reduction talks. They assumed—wrongly, as it turned out—that Moscow would not agree to disarmament unless it was pressured to do so. President Reagan’s ultimate objective was to usher in an era of dialogue and disarmament."
