Am vergangenen Montag, dem 1. August, verhafteten israelische Soldaten im Jenin-Flüchtlingslager Bassam al-Saadi, eine prominente Persönlichkeit im palästinensischen islamischen Dschihad (PIJ) im besetzten Westjordanland.
Trotz seiner Bedeutung kann die Inhaftierung kaum als außergewöhnlich bezeichnet werden. Saadi wurde bereits sieben Mal von Israel verhaftet, zuletzt vor einem Jahr. Routine wäre also eine passende Beschreibung dieser neuesten Haft.

Saadis Verhaftung wurde in der palästinensischen Straße nicht merklich beachtet selbst.

Es wurden keine besonderen Proteste im Westjordanland verzeichnet, und der Pij selbst machte sich mit einer Warnung an Israel aus, um Saadis Gesundheit nicht zu beschädigen.

Warum hat sich Israel bereitwillig dafür entschieden, seine eigenen Bürger in den Gemeinden aus der Region Gaza in die Sperrung zu bringen, obwohl Pij weder Bombardierung noch gestartet hat noch einen gestartet hat? What was the point of this Gaza war?

The three-day assault echoed another Israeli operation in 2019: the assassination of Islamic Jihad commander Baha Abu al-Ata, who was killed while asleep in his home. Back then, I wrote that former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had initiated the killing as an “escape route from his political or legal quagmires.” This time around, it was Lapid who seemed to be searching for a victory image, perhaps in an attempt to burnish his hawkish credentials ahead of the Israeli elections. The result was an unprovoked offensive against a civilian population whose lives are largely dictated by the whims of the Israeli security apparatus.

This is the way Israel’s military and political establishment prefers to run things. Gaza, in many ways, has become the most extreme version of Israel’s bantustanization project in Palestine. Rather than having to manage millions of Palestinians directly, the logic of Israeli apartheid demands that the various enclaves in the occupied territories remain somewhat self-governing, while maintaining the overarching power to control and intervene in their affairs for Israel’s interests.

US, Europe greenlight Israel’s latest Gaza massacre

The European Union not only failed to criticize Israel’s latest attacks on civilians blockaded in an occupied territory, but affirmed that “Israel has the right to protect its civilian population.”

Brussels made no mention of the right of Palestinians to defend themselves and resist Israel’s onslaught.

Palestinian girl dies from wounds sustained in bombing

A 10-year-old Palestinian has died in al-Makassed hospital in occupied East Jerusalem after sustaining severe injuries during Israel's bombardment of the Gaza Strip over the weekend.

Layan al-Shaer from Khan Younis, in the south of the Gaza Strip, was transferred to al-Makassed on Tuesday as her medical condition deteriorated due to an injury to the head.

She became the 48th Palestinian victim of the Israeli military assault on the Gaza Strip, which included four women and 17 children.
Another 360 Palestinians, including 151 children, were wounded, and some remain at risk of losing their lives.

After 15 years of blockade, four out of five children in Gaza say they are living with depression, grief and fear

Fifteen years of life under blockade has left four out of five children in the Gaza Strip reporting that they live with depression, grief and fear, according to disturbing findings released today by Save the Children.

The research found the mental wellbeing of children, young people and caregivers has dramatically deteriorated since a similar study in 2018, with the number of children reporting emotional distress increasing to 80% from 55%. These findings again show that maintaining the current status quo is negatively impacting children’s wellbeing and hopes for a better future.

The report, titled “Trapped”, found a huge increase in children who reported feeling fearful (84% compared to 50% in 2018), nervous (80% compared to 55%), sad or depressed (77% compared to 62%) and grieving (78% compared to 55%). It also found that more than half of Gaza’s children have contemplated suicide[i] and three out of five are self-harming[ii] .
